Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go, a Concentration of Rhythm and Joy

"Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go - Wham" written on a blue light background

Mix a bit of '50s and '60s sound - the rhythmic, a bit swinging one - with the young and rousing rhythm of the '80s. What do you get? It's clear: Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go by Wham!

Ok, by saying young rhythm of the '80s, I mean that it was young then, not that it still is. A clarification, this, for the benefit of the kids of today, who might be a little taken aback by my statement😉.

The fact is that, in 1984, Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go made all the young music lovers sing and dance.

And if you're reading this blog, maybe you're still a little carried away by that captivating rhythm.

The video of the song also inspires good humor, thanks to the joy that George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, both born in '63, release on stage.

All this joy and zest for life should not be confused with a lack of professional seriousness as some press suggested at the time.

The duo was in fact labeled as hedonists, dedicated to a carefree life that shunned work and responsibilities.

Well, Wham! composed, played, sang, and took care of their image despite their collaboration having begun at just 16 years old (in a band called Executive).

The duo Wham! was formed two years later, in 1981. As we all know, it was short-lived: in 1986, Wham! broke up not because of the usual arguments, but simply because of differences of opinion about the future of the group. George wanted to appeal to a more mature and sophisticated audience than their music was attracting (which he later did, successfully, as a solo artist).

Despite the duo's breakup after only three albums, some of their songs are now timeless pieces, identifying '80s pop music.
