Who knows if Paul Young imagined he would soon be climbing the charts all over the world when he decided to include in his second album a cover of a song from five years earlier.
The song I'm talking about is Everytime You Go Away.
Written by American singer Daryl Hall, the piece was included in Voices, the 1980 album by the musical duo he was part of, Hall & Oates.
Voices peaked at number 17 in the US and went platinum, but Everytime You Go Away was not chosen as a single.
Paul Young made the song famous throughout the world five years later, thanks to his cover version released as a single from the album The Secret of Association.
In Europe, Paul Young had achieved a huge success two years earlier with No Parlez, an album that had shot to the top of all the charts in the old continent but had only stopped at number 79 in the United States.
Thanks to Everytime You Go Away, the English singer reached first place in the singles charts in America too.
The Secret of Association obviously benefited from this, reaching #19 on the album charts.
Also in 1985, in July, Paul Young sang Everytime You Go Away in London, on stage at Live Aid, the mega-concert organized in aid of Ethiopia which was attended by the biggest stars of the time.
