There are songs that we all know, whether we like them or not, and that make us hum and dance even without realizing it... in spite of ourselves, if we don't particularly like the song.
Jump by Van Halen, released as a single in December 1983 to launch the album 1984, to be released the following January, is one of these.
I confess that I still automatically hum and dance today when I hear it. And not in spite of myself because I liked and like this song a lot.
By the way, there's no need to select it on our mp3 player or put the vinyl on the stereo to listen to it, because Jump is still a popular song, heard on the radio, in TV programs, in movies, and even at the stadium.
It's in fact used by the soccer teams Milan, Lazio, Olympic Marseille, and the Winnipeg Jets, the Canadian ice hockey team.
Not bad for a piece born - in a certain sense - as an experiment, given the introduction of electronics in the band's hard rock style. Successful experimentation: the now famous synthesizer riff brought Van Halen to first place in the US singles chart.
The video for Jump was directed by Pete Angelus (a manager and music producer who worked with many bands of the time) and David Lee Roth, the singer of Van Halen.
And with a song and video this energetic, the world couldn't help but... jump!
