I haven't listened to Quarterflash's Harden My Heart in years.
Then, on Friday night, I heard it in the movie Rock of Ages and I hummed it all weekend.
And since we have the internet at our disposal compared to 1981, I decided to find out something about this piece.
First of all, Quarterflash was born from the union of two groups from Portland, Oregon.
Seafood Mama was a duo formed by singer and saxophonist Rindy Ross and guitarist Marv Ross (wife and husband).
In 1981, they joined a local band, Pilot, formed by guitarist Jack Charles, keyboardist Rick DiGiallonardo, bassist Rich Gooch, and drummer Brian David Willis.
As a name for the new band, they chose Quarterflash.
The band's first album, titled Quarterflash, was released in the fall of 1981 and also contained Harden my Heart.
The song, however, was not unreleased.
Seafood Mama had in fact released it the previous year on a local label.
To include it on their debut album, Quarterflash worked on a new arrangement, turning it into their most famous piece.
The group disbanded in 1985, only to return in '90, formed only by Marv and Rindy Ross.
