For Bon Jovi, a Hot Summer Means Fun

Young people in bathing suits on the beach having fun. The image reads "Bon Jovi, 99 in the Shade".

What to do when another hot summer arrives with infernal temperatures and mugginess that take root in the cities and don't budge for three months? (OK, it depends on where you live, so if you're Icelandic, forgive the outburst of a poor Italian who's brain is already melted at the end of June).

Simple: have fun!

This was the philosophy of life of the rock stars of the 80s, judging by their songs.

And the philosophy of life of the young people of every generation, I suppose.

So here's a perfect example of a song that talks about heat and fun: 99 in the Shade by Bon Jovi.

The song is part of the LEGENDARY album New Jersey and was used as the B-side of the single Bad Medicine.

But what is 99 in the Shade about? Well, the title says it all.

For those who measure degrees in Celsius, as we do in Italy, 99 degrees Fahrenheit correspond to about 37 degrees, so we're in the middle of summer.

The song's protagonist, driving his old man's Chevrolet with the car radio blaring, is about to join Sahara Jack and Suntan Sally, who may also be joined by the famous Tommy from Livin' on a Prayer.

The program for the day and night? Senoritas, margaritas, surfing, and music. As the saying goes: you only live once!

And you're only young once.
