Seven years before Klaus Meine's famous whistle in Wind of Change became the Scorpions' signature tune worldwide, the band placed its most famous power ballad, Still Loving You, in the European charts.
In the United States, the single stalled at #64, but the album it was part of, Love at First Sting, hit hard and peaked at #6.
Well, the curious thing is that Rudolf Schenker, guitarist and founder of Scorpions, composed the melody of the song in 1976 and proposed it to the other members of the band. Uli Jon Roth, the other guitarist, rejected the piece because it was too commercial and Still Loving You had to wait almost eight years to be included in an album, after being completed with the lyrics written by singer Klaus Meine.
If you're wondering why a metalhead like Uli Jon Roth changed his mind, well, he didn't: in fact, he left the band in 1978.
Luckily, the band didn't forget about that tune and fished it out of their magic hat.
Think of it as you like, but if there was only "non-commercial" music, we wouldn't all be crazy about the seven notes. Some songs are undoubtedly masterpieces, but they don't lend themselves well to being listened to and hummed over and over again, which helps keep you in a good mood.
So, all music is welcome, commercial and not.
