Next Destination, La Isla Bonita

Why spend a Cruel Summer in a sweltering city when La Isla Bonita is available, ready to welcome us with its marine breeze and its wild nature?

In 1986, Madonna Louise Ciccone, aka Madonna, invited her fans to dream, like her, a splendid Latin American island, uncontaminated in the nature and lifestyle of her inhabitants.

A real dream, actually, for those who would like to detach from the frenzy of modern life and the pollution of cities.

La Isla Bonita was born as an instrumental demo composed by Patrick Leonard and Bruce Gaitsch.

The first artist who was proposed was Michael Jackson, at work, at that time, on his album Bad.

Jackson, however, refused the song, and the offer passed to Madonna, who appreciated the Spanish atmosphere of the composition and wrote the lyrics.

La Isla Bonita was included in the 1986 True Blue album and went out as fifth and last single on February 25, 1987.

At that point, True Blue had already exceeded 12 million copies sold, but the single also conquered the world charts and was among the most broadcast on the radio and on TV.

A curious thing about this song is that it entered the chart before even going out as a single. In December 1986, in fact, the Italian singer Micaela published a cover that reached 25th place in the singles chart in the Netherlands.

Despite some negative reviews, La Isla Bonita was also welcomed positively by critics, not always benevolent in judging the previous works of Madonna.

In the video of the song (which has now passed the billion views on YouTube), Madonna plays two characters: a devoted Catholic woman and a showy Flamenco dancer.

One last curiosity: a young (and unknown at the time) Benicio del Toro appears in the video. He is the boy sitting on the car hood in the last minute of video. Seeing is believing.⬇️
