#1 in Canada, US, and France. #2 in Ireland, UK, and New Zealand. #3 in Spain and Belgium. Top ten in Australia, Austria, Finland, Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and South Africa.
These are the results obtained by the 1983 hit by Eurythmics: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).
Taken from the album of the same name, the song is written by the members of the famous British duo: Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart.
Of course, Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) has become the most successful song of the duo, who have nine albums to their credit (collections and live albums aside), all published in the 80s, except the last one, dated 1999.
The song has the synth-pop sound typical of many British bands of the time.
The video, featuring Lennox in men's clothing and with short orange hair (an iconic look that is still talked about today), received heavy rotation on MTV, which probably contributed to its success in the United States, where no Eurythmics single had been released before.
Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) was, in fact, only the duo's second album.
Their debut album, In the Garden (1981), had not even entered the charts in the United Kingdom. It was not that Annie and Dave lacked talent, but the record company failed to do one thing essential for an album, especially one by a debut band: promotion.
Before Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This), three singles had already been released from the second album: This Is the House, The Walk, and Love Is a Stranger. The latter, after the success of Sweet Dreams, was re-released around the world and placed well in almost all the charts.
